Newsletter - November 2007
The holidays are here and consumers are compiling their shopping lists, wish lists, and taking deep breaths for another busy season. What are you shopping for this year? According to Consumer Reports, the number one gift consumers are buying is clothing. However, clothing ranked very high last year for disappointing gifts received, around 38%. Men rank higher in this category, almost 50%. So, the obvious solution this year would be to not give clothing as a gift.
The number two gift consumers are planning to buy in 2007 for the holidays are gift cards. Archstone Consulting's "2007 Holiday Gift Card Survey" found that gift card sales are going to increase by nearly 25% from last year, totaling a whopping $35 billion in sales. Gift cards will not just be a popular gift to buy, they are also one of the top gifts people want to receive, and nearly 54% of people said they wanted a gift card according to the National Retail Federation. The average person will spend $469.14 on their families this holiday season, says the NRF.
With more people shopping online every year, gift cards are the perfect solution for the procrastinator, as well as people who are fed up with waiting in lines and dealing with traffic at local malls and shopping centers. Not only will shopping start earlier this year, well before Black Friday, there are also five Cyber Mondays this year, as opposed to last years four. Retailers always see a spike on these busy shopping days, but with shopping starting well before Thanksgiving and the internet playing a larger role in retail this year, 2007 is sure to bring record sales for merchants.
